Harry Kane expects Tottenham to challenge for the Premier League title and says “there is a long way to go” this season as they prepare to face Manchester United on Saturday.

The Tottenham striker, whose side are five points behind leaders Manchester City, spoke at the FIFA Best Football Awards on Monday where Cristiano Ronaldo was named Best Men’s player.

“We’ve been title contenders the last two years now and we have been very close,” Kane said.

“Manchester City are out at front at the minute but there is a long way to go.”

Tottenham are third in the table on equal points with United, who are ahead on goal difference.

Spurs have finished in the Premier League top four, qualifying for the Champions League, for the past three seasons.

Kane said: “We are a team that not many people talk about at the start, but we are there and we will be there, hopefully, for the rest of the season and then we will see what happens.”

Kane has scored 45 goals in 40 games in 2017, but admits he still has a way to go before reaching the levels of Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Kane said: “[I have to perform] on a consistent basis and on a big stage for example in the Champions League and in World Cups and by winning trophies as well.

“They have set the standard for everyone but I’ve just got to keep improving, keep getting better and see what happens.”
