Michael Bates, a U.K minister at the Department for International Development (DfID) has reportedly resigned for being late to a meeting appointment with the House of Lords, when he should have been there to answer a question that was asked by Labour peer Ruth Lister.

Ovation Magazine Boss, Dele Momodu who shared a video of the moment the U.K Minister resigned, wrote on Instagram;

“On Wednesday, the British Minister Lord Michael Bates got late for several minutes to the House of Lords.
When he entered the hall, he discovered that the Council had discussed a question addressed to him during his absence.

He asked for the permission to talk and said: “I feel ashamed, because I was not present to answer the question, so therefore I announce my immediate resignation,” and then left…”

Though Bates’ resignation was refused, however the brief resignation was one of the most dramatic in recent years.

The U.K Minister said in his apology and resignation full statement;

“I want to offer my sincere apologies to Baroness Lister for my discourtesy in not being in my place to answer her question on a very important matter at the beginning of questions,” Lord Bates said. .

During the five years in which it’s been my privilege to answer questions from this dispatch box on behalf of the government, I’ve always believed that we should rise to the highest possible standards of courtesy and respect in responding on behalf of the government to the legitimate questions of the legislature.

I’m thoroughly ashamed at not being in my place and therefore I shall be offering my resignation to the prime minister with immediate effect. I do apologise.”
